Frits’ Notes 22
Cultural interpretation
· How one culture interprets the characteristics of another: This may include:
Ø How music is interpreted (good, bad, humorous [Eg Eurovision song contest]) this area can be broken down into heaps of categories
Ø Language: for example slang (how slang is formed within a specific country or specific region; how it can be easily misinterpreted or completely misunderstood by another culture … eg. Billy Connolly mimicking a Scotsman who’s accent is so thick, no-one else can understand him; satire)
Ø Fashion: Even within a culture, how time affects people’s perceptions about what is ‘cool’ or ‘funny’
Ø Differences/similarities = what is the threshold, or turning point at which one culture can be interpreted/accepted by another? E.g. Are there universal customs/traits between cultures? Is culture/religion necessary to effective communication between cultures? What are the basic human traits that we all share? I’m thinking there may be room here to identify our ‘problem’; perhaps we could deal with racism or less severely, how different cultures can find a common ground from which to interact with one another…
Ø I’ve got other ideas but can’t remember them!
